At Schuyler’s words, I too looked up.
Standing before us was Mark’s twin, judging from the lack of a watch around
either of his wrists. “Oh wow,” I
breathed. He towered over Schuyler and I, and wore his long, caramel-coloured
hair loose over his shoulders. Peering down at us in what looked like
amusement, over a pair of rectangular-framed glasses, was a set of bright blue
eyes.

“When I found out that my dad had been
killed, my whole world stopped. There are really no words to describe how I
felt at that precise moment. And now that he’s gone, there’s a gaping chasm
deep inside me, one that I know in my heart can never be filled.” I drew in a
deep breath, trying to steady myself. “I want him to come home so badly and
tell me he’s never leaving me again, tell me that he’ll always be there for me
when I need him the most. Well, right now is when I need him the most…and he
isn’t here anymore.”

The voice had come from my right. I
looked over to see a tall guy dressed in jeans, black T-shirt, hoodie and sneakers
leaning against the front of the merchandise table, his elbows braced behind
him so that he stayed more or less upright. He had his light brown hair pulled
back into a low ponytail at the back of his head, and when he looked at me I
let out a low mental whistle of awe. His eyes were the brightest blue I had
seen in a long while.

The ride down to the hotel foyer was
tense. None of us knew if the power was going to be cut during our trip
downstairs – we just had to hope that if the hotel staff was planning to knock
out the electricity supply to the lifts, they would wait until after we had
made it safely to ground level. Luckily for us the lift stopped at the foyer
level without the power being cut, and we were soon heading quickly across to
the revolving doors that led the way out onto the street.

Without
even thinking about it, as soon as I had typed my name at the end of the email
I sent it off into the electronic aether. It was done now – I had gone and
thrown myself and the girls into the lion’s den. Mike would send my name, email
address, mobile number and the MP3s of Nevermore’s second and newest EP off to
whoever Hanson’s management were. And if we were particularly unlucky, before
the fortnight was out I’d be getting a phone call or an email from the United
States and that would be it – I’d be on tour with not just my three best
friends, but also with a band that I had spent fifteen years despising even
just the sight of.
